You know life insurance is important, but are you scared to apply? Many people think they will have a hard time qualifying for life insurance, but if you fall into one of these six groups, you may want to try again.
If you have been living with diabetes (and it is well-controlled) you may have an easier time qualifying for life insurance than you might have thought. Life insurance companies like to see applicants being compliant to what their doctor has prescribed or recommended as well as working to keep it under control. If you have recently been diagnosed with diabetes it may not be the best time to apply for life insurance. It can take some time for you and your doctor to find the right balance to control your symptoms. Wait until you and your doctor feels like the symptoms are under control. Once it is controlled, the condition may be insurable
Chewing tobacco users
Previously if you were a tobacco chewer or snuffer, you may have thought you couldn’t get life insurance or that it would be way too expensive. Now, Farm Bureau offers eligible smokeless tobacco users a non-tobacco rate. If your labs show you are healthy, this can be a much more affordable rate.
Hazardous sport enthusiasts
Life insurance companies don’t necessarily like it when you choose to engage in dangerous activities, but it doesn’t mean you’re uninsurable just because you like to jump out of a perfectly good airplane. The company will want you be good at your chosen hobby. Whether you’re a scuba diver or skydiver, the company will want to see that you have had sufficient training, hold any certifications, and do it frequently. You may think it seems silly they want you to participate in this seemingly dangerous sport frequently, but the more practice you get, the more proficient you are.
If you’re a pilot, you’ll probably end up answering more questions on what kind of pilot you are, how many hours per year and how many flights per year. A company may not have as much of a concern with commercial airline pilots, because they are doing a lot of flights in a year and are very well trained and licensed. If you are a crop duster with only a few flights a year for a few hours, so not as much experience, you may still be insurable but it could be at a higher rate. If you’re a hobby flier, what kind of airplane are you flying? What training or licenses do you have? Is anyone flying with you? Most companies will want to stay away from those pilots that are flying experimental aircrafts.
Mental health conditions
Having a mental health condition doesn’t disqualify you from life insurance. If you have your condition controlled you may qualify for life insurance. Seeing a therapist, taking medication prescribed by your doctor, and showing that you are still highly functional in society are all good things that will help a company feel more comfortable insuring you.
If you’re looking to start a family, it’s a good idea to start to think about life insurance. There was once a time when insurers discouraged pregnant women from applying for life insurance. Things have changed. However, the approval process can be tricky when you are pregnant. Pregnancy related health concerns such as weight gain, elevated blood pressure or elevated blood sugar, can affect your insurability and or rate class. It may still be best to plan to apply for a policy before you become pregnant or after you give birth. Some companies may allow you to apply while pregnant. It will depend on the company and your current health.
If you fit in to any of the groups above, you may be relieved to know that you still might qualify for life insurance. Each applicant is reviewed on a case by case basis, so you still may not qualify. But if you are otherwise healthy, your chances will be better at being accepted. Life insurance companies want to see that you are working to improve or maintain your health. Simply put, if you follow your doctor’s orders you are much more likely to qualify. If you have any questions or are ready to apply for a life insurance policy, call your Farm Bureau Agent to get started.
